This guide is for companies buying transport. Car owners: we run our own fleet and are not adding cars from owners at the moment (why).
Quick answer
Employee transport becomes greener mainly by moving more people in fewer vehicles over fewer kilometres: shared routes instead of individual trips, fuller vehicles, and fewer empty runs. CNG or electric cars help further where routes suit them. For ESG reporting, use measured data: kilometres per vehicle, trips, seat occupancy and fuel use.
Chapter 01
Where do the real environmental gains come from?
From moving the same people with fewer vehicle-kilometres: shared routes, fuller vehicles, shorter routes and fewer empty runs.
| Lever | What it changes | How to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Shared routes | One vehicle instead of many individual trips | Riders per trip |
| Fuller vehicles | Right-sized vehicles for each route | Seat occupancy |
| Better routes | Fewer kilometres per rider | Kilometres per trip |
| Fewer empty runs | Less driving without passengers | Kilometres from garage to first pickup |
| Cleaner fuel | CNG or electric where routes suit | Fuel use per vehicle |
A route redesign that removes one vehicle saves more than a change of fuel on a half-empty one. That is why the first step is a review of routes and seat occupancy.
Chapter 02
What can CNG and electric cars do?
They can lower fuel emissions on suitable routes. We provide CNG or electric cars on request, with rates quoted per company.
- Available on request: CNG or electric cars, rates quoted.
- Route fit matters: range, charging or filling points and shift timings decide where they work.
- Larger vehicles: Tempo Travellers and buses on routes with many riders often save more per rider than a cleaner car with few.
- No overclaiming: report the fuel and kilometres you actually ran.
Chapter 03
What data do you need for ESG reporting?
Kilometres per vehicle, number of trips, riders or seat occupancy, vehicle type and fuel use, by month and by site.
Most reporting methods convert kilometres or fuel into emissions using factors your sustainability team chooses. The transport vendor's job is to supply clean, consistent input data. With us that means: trip-wise records (date, route, km, car) in Excel or PDF, a monthly km and trip summary, boarding lists that show riders per trip, utilisation reports (vehicle use, seat occupancy, monthly spend per plant) and fuel use or mileage per vehicle, all on request.
We give you the kilometres and the trips. Your method turns them into emissions. Keeping those two jobs separate keeps the numbers honest. How we support ESG reports
Chapter 04
How do you make employee transport greener step by step?
Measure the baseline, redesign routes, right-size vehicles, add cleaner fuel where it fits, and report with the method.
- Measure the baseline. Three months of kilometres, trips, riders and fuel.
- Redesign routes. Fewer kilometres per rider; merge half-empty routes.
- Right-size vehicles. Bigger vehicles on full routes, smaller on thin ones.
- Add CNG or electric where it fits. On routes where range and timings work.
- Set targets. Cost and kilometre reduction targets can be agreed in an annual contract.
- Report with the method. State the data source and conversion factors.
Key terms
ESG and commuting terms

- Scope 3, category 7
- In the GHG Protocol, emissions from employees commuting between home and work.
- Seat occupancy
- The share of seats used on a vehicle's trips.
- Empty kilometres
- Kilometres run without passengers, such as to the first pickup.
- Emission factor
- A figure that converts fuel or kilometres into emissions, chosen by your reporting method.

Questions
ESG and green transport questions
Do you have electric or CNG cars?
Yes, CNG or electric cars on request; rates are quoted per company.
Can you give us emissions figures?
We give the inputs (kilometres, trips, riders, fuel use); your reporting method converts them into emissions.
Is shared employee transport greener than people driving?
Generally, moving several people in one vehicle uses fewer vehicle-kilometres than individual trips; measure your own routes to report it.
Can you report seat occupancy?
Yes, in a utilisation report on request.
Can you track fuel use per vehicle?
Yes, fuel use or mileage per vehicle is tracked and reported on request.
Can we set reduction targets in the contract?
Yes, cost-reduction targets can be agreed in an annual contract.
Do CNG cars cost differently?
Rates for CNG or electric cars are quoted per company.
Does this help the social side of ESG?
Yes: safe, reliable transport with clear night-drop rules and data privacy is part of the social story.

Chapter 05
What about the social side of ESG?
Safe, reliable and fair transport is part of the social story: duty of care, night-drop rules, women's safety and data privacy.
Transport also shows up in the "S" of ESG: safe travel for shift staff, night-drop rules, female drivers on request, a confidential route for safety concerns, and employee data that is never shared or sold. See duty of care in employee transport.
