Suzuki Motor Gujarat: the SMG plant at a glance
The Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG) plant at Hansalpur, near Becharaji, is one of India's largest car factories. It opened on 1 February 2017, and since its fourth plant started on 30 July 2026 it can build 1 million cars a year. It sits in the Mandal Becharaji Special Investment Region (MBSIR), the industrial belt around Becharaji.
SMG was the first and only Suzuki car plant in India owned directly by Suzuki as a foreign company until 2025, which shows how important it is to Suzuki's global plans.
SMG, a wholly owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, passed 3 million cumulative production, the fastest of any Suzuki-run facility to reach that mark.
Why the location works
Industrial hub
MBSIR gives the plant good links to the ports of Mundra and Kandla, which helps exports and parts supply.
Ready infrastructure
The region has power, water and logistics built for large factories, so suppliers set up close by.
What does the SMG plant make?
The SMG plant builds Maruti Suzuki's Swift, Baleno, Dzire and Fronx for India and for export, and since 30 July 2026 the e VITARA electric SUV. In FY2022-23, about half of the vehicles Maruti Suzuki exported were built here.
