How do the Sanand estates differ?
By age, size and the kind of industry GIDC has planned for each. For a driver, the practical difference is which road and which gate.

|---|---|---|---|
| GIDC Sanand estate | GIDC's large estate near Sanand, about 2,056 ha | Automobiles and auto components, electronics, pharmaceuticals and engineering; the Tata Motors plant (formerly Ford's) and the Micron semiconductor site are here | Estate, plot number and gate |
| Sanand II, Bol area | Part of the GIDC Sanand estate, laid out in ten product-based cluster zones | Grouped by product cluster | Bol, the cluster or zone, plot number |

What should you tell a driver going to a Sanand unit?
Five things: the estate, the plot number, the gate, a landmark and a contact at the unit. With those, the driver goes straight to the gate instead of circling the estate.
Estate: GIDC Sanand / Bol (Sanand II) / Khoraj (Sanand III) Plot no.: ____ · Gate: ____ Landmark: ____ (a big neighbouring plant or road junction) Contact at the unit: ____ (name, mobile) Pickup: ____ · Date & time: ____
Large plants often have separate gates for staff, visitors and trucks, and security at each sends a car to another gate if it arrives at the wrong one. If you are a visitor, ask your host which gate to use and whether the car needs a pass; we send the car number and driver's name in advance so the pass can be ready.
Background
Why is Sanand one of Gujarat's busiest industrial areas?
Car making started the growth and electronics is adding to it. The estates sit close to Ahmedabad and its airport, which suits companies whose staff and visitors fly in.
Automobiles
The estate grew around car plants. The Tata Motors plant at Sanand, which took over the former Ford factory, is the best known, and component makers followed. Many of them also supply plants in the Becharaji and Mandal area, about 90 km away, which is why staff and engineers travel between the two clusters often.
Electronics and semiconductors
Micron is building a semiconductor assembly and test plant on 93 acres in the GIDC Sanand estate, a project reported to create about 5,000 direct jobs (Business Today). New sites like this bring construction crews, commissioning engineers, foreign visitors and, later, shift workers, all of whom need transport.
